Does it seem as if you can’t lose weight no matter how hard you try? If you are following a reasonable eating program, sticking to that program faithfully, and getting regular exercise of the right type (we’ll talk about that in a later post); but still seem to pack on the pounds, it’s time to look for some hidden culprits.
What do hormones have to do with it?
We’ve talked about hormones, and their importance to vitality and health. Hormones are the chemical messengers that tell your cells what to do. They make you a man or a woman. They put you to bed at night and wake you up in the morning (or at 4 am!). They rule your heart rate and blood pressure. They calm you down, or rev you up, and relieve depression. They control your appetites—for both food and sex.
Since your body is made up of trillions of these hormonal cells, it’s important that they are getting the right messages to your body. Your health–and your very life depend on it. So what does this have to do with the toxic, chemical load that bombards us each day? Harmful chemicals that abound in our food supply and in the cleaning and personal care products we use each day can sabotage even our best attempts to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by interfering with the messages that our hormones are trying to carry to the brain and to the rest of the body.
How do they do that?
Your endocrine (hormonal) system performs an amazing balancing act each and every day. All the hormones in your body have to act in sync with each other like the players on a team—or the musicians in an orchestra. If one of them is “out of tune,” then the whole shebang is out of whack! Too much or too little of any hormone can cause serious health issues. For example, too much thyroid hormone can give you heart palpitations, anxiety attacks, and insomnia. Too little of this same hormone, however will cause you to gain weight, make your hair fall out, make your skin dry, and make you feel cold all the time.
Like Goldilocks and the three bears…
Remember that story? One bed was too hard, the other too soft, but that last bed was just right. And so it is with hormones. One little bit too much or too little, and you can feel the effects.
Look on just about any cleaning product and you will notice a lack of an ingredient list. Could it be because so many have ingredients that are toxic? There is a long list of harmful ingredients that are in many household cleaners and are of particular concern because they are carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, or known or suspected reproductive toxins. This list also contains the more widely known chemicals and additives in body and food products. There are thousands more in use. Many of the chemicals are suspected or known carcinogens, toxins, hormone disruptors, poisons and contaminates.

Think of your gut as a garden. In this garden, there are both vegetables and weeds. Whatever you add to that garden will either benefit or tear down the terrain of that garden. The better the terrain, the better the production of that garden. Just like that garden, your gut contains millions of strains of bacteria—some good; and some harmful. Microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract form an intricate, living fabric of natural controls that affect your body weight, your energy level, and your ability to absorb nutrients from your food. Every human’s “garden” of gut microbes is unique, begins at birth, and is sensitive to environmental conditions.
Babies who are delivered vaginally are introduced immediately after birth to lactobacillus and Prevotella. These are beneficial bacterium. In contrast, babies delivered by C-section are initially exposed to the microbes on the mother’s skin including staphylococcus. Why is this important? Just like that garden, there is a profound interaction between the microbes to which we are exposed, and our overall health. A dynamic interaction exists throughout your life between your gut, your brain, and your immune system. Because of this, children who start out life without the right balance of flora in their guts are more prone to exhibit symptoms that fit the diagnoses of autism, ADD/ADHD, asthma, allergies, and a host of other problems.
So what can you do? You can’t change the past, but you can change the future!
- Reseed your gut with good stuff like fermented whole foods and probiotics. These can be obtained through our office.
- Avoid eating or drinking anything that destroys the terrain of your gut-garden. This would include antibiotics, because they wipe out the beneficial bacteria and give a window of opportunity for the bad stuff to proliferate. It also includes sugar and processed foods (anything you don’t make from scratch, or that you know wasn’t made from scratch). Processed foods high in sugar and chemical additives and low in nutrients is a surefire way to kill off the beneficial bacteria in your gut. When this happens, it allows the bad stuff to thrive.
- Include in your diet on a regular basis: bone broth, fermented vegetables, Amasai or Keifer.
- Take supplements including Terra Firma and Probiotics. These are also available in our office.
- Practice intermittent fasting to give your digestive system time to recover. We will have more about the practice of intermittent fasting in subsequent blogposts.
It’s springtime, and there is no better time to get out there and tend your garden. And there is no better time to repair and tend your gut-garden so that you will have many more healthy years to come!
- 1 whole free-range chicken or 2-3 pounds of bony chicken parts, such as necks, backs, breastbones, or wings Also you can use beef bones. Make sure they are organically-raised, pastured, and grass-fed animals.
- gizzards from one chicken (optional)
- 2-4 chicken feet (optional) (available at oriental grocery stores)
- 4 quarts cold filtered water
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 large onion, coarsely chopped
- 2 carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
- 3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
- 1 bunch fresh parsley
- Fill up a large stockpot or large crockpot with pure, filtered water.
- Add vinegar and all vegetables except parsley to the water
- Place the whole chicken or chicken carcass into the pot.
- Bring to a boil, and remove any scum that rises to the top.
- Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and let simmer.
- If cooking a whole chicken, the meat should start separating from the bone after about 2 hours. Simply remove the chicken from the pot and separate the meat from the bones. Place the bones back into the pot and continue simmering for another 12-24 hours.
- Add the parsley about 10 minutes before finishing the stock as this will add healthy mineral ions to your broth.
- Remove remaining bones from the broth with a slotted spoon and strain the rest through a strainer to remove any bone fragments.
Gelatin has been known throughout history as one of the most nutritious foodstuffs available. The gelatin that comes off the bones is not a complete protein, containing only the amino acids arginine and glycine in large amounts, but it acts as protein sparer, helping to stretch morsels into a complete meal. Even if you don’t have the financial resources for a lot of organic meat, everyone can enjoy a delicious pot of soup!
